Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) is located in the centre and inner west of Sydney. With around 12,000 staff and a budget of $1.7bn, the district is responsible for the health and wellbeing of more than 700,000 people living within its boundaries, and more than a million people who come into the district each day to work, study and visit.

SLHD is made up of 5 Hospitals - Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Canterbury Hospital, Concord Repatriation Hospital, Balmain Hospital and the Sydney Dental Hospital, and a broad range of community health services and associated support services. It is one of the largest and most complex health services in Australia, with a strong reputation for providing the highest levels of care, globally renowned academic and research collaboration, and a culture characterised by visionary thinking, innovative models of care and contemporary partnerships. It is currently undertaking a series of investments and redevelopments across the District including the $750m redevelopment of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA).

SLHD is now seeking to appoint this key medical leadership role - Executive Director Medical Services (EDMS) for the district.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the EDMS is responsible for the provision of expert professional and clinical leadership in the strategic and operational management of medical services and medical workforce across SLHD. As part of the SLHD Executive, the EDMS will contribute to achieving overall strategic and operational objectives of the health service and will provide advice to the Chief Executive and other Executives on Medical Workforce matters, medico-legal issues and relevant statutory requirements. The EDMS will forge collegial relationships across a variety of stakeholders including academic and research partners, community groups, NSW Health and the SLHD Executive and Board. Underpinning the person's success will be their ability to continue to build the culture of collaboration and excellence, during an exciting period of growth, investment, redevelopment and change.

For this district wide role, we are seeking an outstanding medical leader who has held a significant district / health service wide EDMS (or potentially deputy or equivalent) role within a comparable scale public health service and who has a track record of leading and driving successful organisational and cultural excellence across a complex public health service. Experience working with government, academic, research and community stakeholders at a state and national level is critical, as is the ability to forge powerful relationships across NSW Health.

SLHD is open to the background of the individual appointed for this role; they will clearly be a Senior Staff Specialist and hold either a RACMA Fellowship or equally Fellowship with another recognised Australasian Specialist College. The individual will need to demonstrate exceptional communication and engagement skills and a track record of successfully forging powerful relationships with medical staff, their executive team and the broader clinical and research communities. Underpinning their success will be their ability to lead, motivate and inspire their teams to be the very best, within a highly challenging and demanding environment. We anticipate this experience will most likely have been gained from either the Australian or New Zealand health sector.
