Job Description

Medical Unit Director, Paediatrics and Child Health
Canberra Health Services
Strategic medical leadership role, based in Canberra, Australia
Generous national / international relocation assistance provided

Canberra Health Services (CHS) is a world class tertiary health care organisation which delivers a range of high quality, patient centred services for patients and consumers across the ACT and surrounding Southern NSW region. Services are delivered through a range of health facilities and networks including Canberra Hospital, University of Canberra Hospital, Walk-in Centres and Community Health Centres. CHS has strong academic and research partnerships with the Australian National University, the University of Canberra and the Australian Catholic University and is one of the largest employers in the region, with a workforce of c8,000.

The Women, Youth and Children (WYC) division delivers a range of services including Paediatrics and Child Health, Community Health Programs, Paediatric Surgery, Neonatology and Maternity Services.  The Department of Paediatrics and Child Health is accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) for training in General Paediatrics, Paediatric Endocrinology and Community Paediatrics.  Due to internal changes, CHS is now seeking an outstanding Medical Unit Director to lead this established and growing team.  In this critical role, you will:
  • Lead the operational management and clinical leadership of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health;
  • Take a collective leadership role across the broader WYC division;
  • In partnership with the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON), engage in service redesign and models of care development, ensuring the division operates within world class clinical governance and patient safety frameworks;
  • Work across the broader division and CHS, modelling a child and family centred approach to care with a focus on the total patient experience;
  • Balance leadership time and duties with clinical activities; participate in the clinic and on-call rosters for the service, ensuring service delivery targets for patient flow, access and discharge planning are achieved;
  • Lead medical workforce training, professional development and recruitment and continue to build the culture of collaboration and excellence, during an exciting period of growth, investment, redevelopment and change;
  • Take an active role in budget planning and financial management with other members of the WYC leadership team;
  • Forge collegial relationships across a variety of stakeholders including academic and research partners, community groups, RACP, primary health and other health services;
  • Foster a responsive, future focused and contemporary culture which supports all staff to deliver true excellence in patient care, embracing the values of Canberra Health Services of Reliable, Progressive, Respectful and Kind.
We are seeking a Paediatrician who is registered, or eligible for registration, with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, has Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and has successfully completed RACP Paediatrics training or equivalent. You will demonstrate the highest standards of medical practice and credentials. You will possess the capacity to work collaboratively across a multi-faceted organisational landscape and inspire your direct and indirect teams to set the highest standards of healthcare provision.  Critical to your success will be your strong communication and engagement skills and your track record of successfully forging powerful relationships with staff, stakeholders, and the broader community.

Professionally, CHS offers the flexibility to balance this role with other activities such as research and teaching, depending upon individual aspirations and preferences.

This represents an exciting opportunity to support world class healthcare across this thriving community.  It also offers the prospect of living in the beautiful and picturesque ACT region and becoming part of the friendly and community centred culture which the area is renowned for.
CHS is committed to workforce diversity and to creating an inclusive workplace. As part of this commitment, we welcome applications from all diversity groups. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disability and people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, or Questioning (LGBTIQ) are particularly encouraged to apply.
