Job Description

  • Willoughby City Council
  • Lead a large and diverse portfolio of services
  • Rare opportunity to make a difference

Willoughby City Council is human-centred organisation with a progressive culture focussed on continuous learning and high team performance.

The City of Willoughby is diverse in its economy, culture and environment. The City is known for its Chatswood retail and commercial district and transport hub together with its regional performing arts complex at The Concourse and significant community events. The St Leonards area is a vibrant education and health precinct which includes the Royal North Shore and private hospitals and ancillary health facilities. The area’s thriving economy is complemented by a skilled workforce and attractive living environments with significant historical and natural areas including native bushland, Lane Cove River, and the Middle Harbour estuary.

This role is one of three Directors reporting to the CEO to form the Executive Leadership Team responsible for advising, shaping, and driving the strategic direction, cultural changes and productivity of the organisation.

You will have strategic and operational responsibility of a large and diverse portfolio of services spanning for Council’s Culture and Leisure; Community Life; Marketing, Media and Events portfolios with an operating budget of $23.5 million and over 200 full time and casual staff. Services provided cover children, aged, disability, youth, the vulnerable and isolated, as well as Willoughby’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities. You will manage the programs offered from facilities such as theatres, libraries, sports fields and centres for leisure, youth and the community.

As the ‘heart and soul’ of Council’s community engagement, it is essential that you have demonstrated that you are bold, ambitious, and resilient in providing valuable, cost-effective services to achieve better outcomes for the community.

We are seeking an energetic and inspirational leader who builds teams with the courage to develop and change to provide human-oriented and customer-centric services. The ability to communicate a vision and build engagement with diverse stakeholders will be key to your success. Experience working in local government is not essential, however you will have experience leading large multidisciplinary teams delivering community focussed services.

This is a great opportunity to make an impact. Willoughby City Council is known for its positive culture, consistently strong performance, and you will be joining a talented leadership team that is passionate about innovation and stretching for improvement.

A competitive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Willoughby City Council welcomes and encourages applications from people with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people with diverse culture and linguistic backgrounds.
