We are the main provider of health services to people in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne and is also a major provider of specialist services to people across Victoria. The Health Service operates three outstanding facilities: The Alfred, Caulfield and Sandringham Hospitals.

Monash has six campuses in Victoria, and its Central Clinical School is part of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Science, co-located with The Alfred hospital.

We are currently seeking a new Director / Professor and Director of General Medicine.

General Medicine is a long-established specialty at The Alfred and Sandringham Hospital providing a comprehensive range of assessment and treatments and caring for people with often multiple or complex medical problems. General Medicine is seen as a leader in ‘Home First’ approaches, a strategic priority for Alfred Health and is building a reputation for delivering outstanding care in the home, forging partnerships with primary care agencies, and minimising time spent in inpatient settings where safe to do so. As part of the Acute and General Medicine stream the General Medicine team enjoy access to inpatient, community, and clinic settings of care, and are well supported by an enviable suite of innovative community services, including our Hospital Admission Risk Program (HARP).
Our teams are staffed by consultant physicians in General Medicine, many of whom also have an additional subspecialty qualification, a large nursing team with a diverse range of medical and sub-specialty acute clinical experience and a comprehensive team of allied health specialists.

The General Medicine service at The Alfred plays an integral role in supervising peri-operative management of patients, assisting with the management of medical problems in patients following trauma and has played an active role in the pandemic response, particularly overseeing the COVID Community Pathway. The Department is an important provider of supervised education and training for a number of disciplines including trainee specialists and junior doctors.
The Director General Medicine will be responsible for leadership and ongoing strategic development and innovation of General Medicine across Alfred Health. They will work closely with the Deputy Director of Operations – Acute to translate strategy into operational systems and processes. The successful candidate will undertake clinical sessions as part of their appointment. He/she will be accountable to the Program Director Alfred Home, Acute and Community for the provision of clinical and consultative services in General Medicine, development of the service, patient safety, quality and professional medical leadership.

Depending on the successful candidate’s academic experience, a joint or an adjunct appointment with Monash University can be considered.

The successful candidate will:
• provide strong management and leadership to the General Medicine Department.
• provide excellent clinical expertise for safe effective patient care.
• provide supervision to junior and senior medical and other relevant staff within the Unit/ Department.
• support Alfred Health’s quality, monitoring and improvement initiatives.
• support Alfred Health’s teaching, research and clinical governance programs.
• support the strategic priorities and values of Alfred Health.

Candidates must be legally qualified medical practitioners, registered or registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), possess a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and demonstrate relevant knowledge and experience gained in a major teaching hospital. You will possess substantial clinical experience in General Medicine or a specific sub-specialty area with demonstrated innovative capabilities and outcomes in that discipline. National and international recognition for academic excellence as evidenced by publications and other scholarly achievements is desirable for someone with an academic profile.
